I had this sent to me from a very credible source. The data cited in the email is correct and should sound very familiar (especially for readers of this blog).
Please take action on this NOW! If you are unfamiliar with SB251 (E-Verify) and the child identity theft issue, click here.
I talked to the Governor today and I got the distinct impression that he is going to veto SB251 – Verification of Employment Eligibility even though it protects all children from job-related ID theft. He says that the entire business establishment is now against it as is the Hispanic community.
We need to bombard his office with phone calls and e-mails. Here are the addresses, subject line and text for e-mails and phone calls. Please send this e-mail as drafted to everyone on your e-mail list and ask them to help out.
The following e-mail is totally about the business implications of the bill so DO NOT make this into an immigration issue and don’t refer to those opposing the bill in your calls or e-mails.
Subject: Sign SB251 – Protect Businesses Currently Using E-Verify
Many Utah businesses with state and/or federal contracts are required to use E-Verify under SB81 and federal contracting regulations. These companies face unfair competition from businesses that don’t use E-Verify and that continue to hire illegal labor.
In addition, many of the businesses that Utah’s economic development officials would like to attract to Utah are federal contractors and are already using E-Verify. Once they sign up for E-Verify they have to use it wherever they have operations so make sure Utah offers them a level playing field otherwise they may not come to Utah.
Finally, with high unemployment, all employers should be using E-Verify to make certain that jobs go to legal workers rather than individuals who are unlawfully in the United States. This will help reduce the costs that the state incurs when Americans are jobless.
Please sign SB251 and level the playing field for businesses that are following the law, providing services to the state, interested in locating to Utah, hiring legal workers and protecting our children from job-related identity theft.
On a personal note: Yesterday, a family friend was informed by Utah Workforce Services that someone was using his name and SSN for employment. Add another victim to the tally.
Again, please contact the Governor (as indicated above) NOW.
Update: Don’t forget Gov. Herbert also has a twitter account: twitter.com/governorherbert – Here’s a simple message for it:
@governorherbert Please protect children’s IDs and businesses using everify from illegal labor and id theft. Please sign SB251.
